This training course teaches the basic skills of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), administering CPR as a team and using the automated external defibrillator (AED) safely, correctly and efficiently. These basic principles of BLS can be applied to in-hospital or out-of-hospital emergency cardiac arrest scenarios. The skills of basic CPR, safe use of an AED, management of choking in an adult, child or infant are facilitated through video based practice-while-watching and the guidance of an experienced facilitator.

This American Heart Association training course is also a mandatory pre-entry requirement to training courses such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). As BLS for Healthcare Providers is a Continuing Profesional Development (CPD) accredited course, it is a must for any professional person involved in the health care industry. BLS for Healthcare Providers is a comprehensive course that will make improve competence with the use of adjuncts like face masks and bag-mask-valve (BMV) devices.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course Content:

This BLS course is designed to teach the skills of CPR and choking for adults, children and infants. It includes ventilation with barrier devices such as a mouth piece, pocket mask and BMV device with the use of supplemental oxygen or without. The safe use of a AED is demonstrated and practiced. BLS for Healthcare Providers is a comprehensive CPR skills training course that will enable any health care provider to save numerous lives in any emergency setting, in or outside the hospital.

During this BLS training course other topics such as relevant anatomy and physiology, the signs and symptoms of myocardial infarctions, cerebro-vascular accidents, etc. will also be touched on.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course Duration:

BLS for Healthcare Provides training is provided over 5 to 6 hours.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course Fees include:

  • A Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers student manual with CD is provided for the course participant to review before, during and after attending the training. A key pouch with gloves and mouth piece is provided for future use in an emergency situation.
  • Upon successful completion of the training course an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers course completion card valid for two years will be issued.
  • A Continuing Professional Development Certificate worth 38 CPD points if HPCSA number is provided.

Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course Participation Requirements:

  • Course participants must be able to read, write and understand English as well as have basic numeracy skills.
  • Participants will be required to obtain at least 85% for a written evaluation and demonstrate proficiency in CPR and the safe use of an AED.
